Record Your Drumming
My students probably got annoyed by me saying too many times that I highly recommend them recording their practice, or drumming in general.
Drumming requires a lot of body and limb movements. The way we move our limbs will largely affect how good or bad we sound. Often times we know there is something wrong with our playing, but we didn’t know what exactly. Did you try video record your practice? You will be surprised how much information you can discover from the video.
“I wanted to record. But I didn’t have a video camera.”
Yes, you have one in your pocket! Just start filming with your phone. Our phones are a better video camara than we thought. A lot of them actually sound pretty good for a phone. And even better is, it is totally free!
Here is myself casually filming my playing several years ago.
(I was just using a LG. I bet your phone is 10 times better than mine.)
I can’t stress enough how significant it is to our playing. We thought we know our drumming very well until we have the chance to see our actual playing in the video. It is the same reason why all proper dance studios have mirrors on the walls.
