How to choose your first pair of drumsticks?
Choosing the right drumsticks among the huge options could be very confusing, especially for beginners who lack the experiences and knowledge. But it could be easier than most people think.
The amount of options is overwhelming. But I always recommend to start with the model of 5A.
5A is one of the standard and common models that most (if not all) drumstick companies will produce. It is so common and versatile that 5A is like trainers in sneaker world. No matter what music store you go to, you can always find 5A sticks.
Major drumstick brands such as Vic Firth, Promark, Vater, Zildjian, etc, they all have stable production of 5A. Which means you won’t be forced to change your stick simply because it’s no longer available on the market.
For beginners who haven’t developed their preferences and styles in their playing, most of them can’t really tell the differences of different models. 5A sets a good starting point for most entry level drummers. If 5A is too light/thin, go for something heavier/thicker like 5B, or even 2B. If it’s too heavy/thick, go for something lighter/thinner such as 7A.
Choose the model you feel the most comfortable and natural in your hand.
If you are buying drumsticks for children, 5A also comes in junior size. Some brands even offer a wide range of color options. Kids love colorful sticks.
